Santa Claus is Coming to Town

Prequels and origin stories are all the rage at the moment. If a film is successful, pretty soon you will see a sequel. But, once the film-makers run out of stories for their heroes, they will usually reboot the series. And it will often begin with the origin story.

The most Christmassy of all origin stories will always be, of course, Santa Claus: The Movie.

Released in 1985, it was made by the producers who brought Christopher Reeve’s Superman to the screen and had a big budget, with a cast of big stars.

Yes, it has a script that, at times, is a little clunky. And the acting, particularly by the child actors, is a tad wooden. But, without any doubt, it is worthy of being classed as one of those must watch movies during the festive season.

For a short time, the producers of the film ran TV spots and specials where they suggested that the Santa Claus in their film was actually the real Santa. As good as he was at the role, David Huddleston was an actor with a career spanning more than 50 years. His Santa Claus was clearly amongst some of his best works.

Now, as much as I enjoy watching Santa Claus: The Movie, i believe that it should come with a disclaimer. The real origin story of Big Red is a little different to the one portrayed here and in other stories told over the years. The real story behind how Santa Claus came to be is much more exciting, and one day I might let you in on the secret. One day.
